"Our History"

As of 1948 neighboring fire departments were refusing to respond out of their districts into Kingsbury. After a house fire that burned to the ground where East Side Salvage Yard is today,a group of men got together and decided there was a need to form a fire department to protect their own community.

On November 9th 1948 residents representing various parts of the town of Kingsbury met at the Kingsbury Grange Hall on Burgoyne Ave. in the area of where Ringers Auto Sales is today. At this meeting the first officers of the department were elected. Fire Chief - James Mix, 1st Asst. - Chief Richard Hogan, Secratary - Raymond Normandin, Treasurer - Alex Flannigan, Captain - Earl Scott, and Asst. Captain - Raymond Burwash. Also the name of the department was voted on: Kingsbury Volunteer Hose Co. # 1.

On December 1st 1948 a letter was sent to the Town Board of Kingsbury, requesting recognition of a need for fire protection, and on December 28th 1948 the town board consented to the formation of the Kingsbury Volunteer Hose Co. # 1. On January 10th 1949 the fire company was incorperated and a charter was filed with the state department and recorded with Washington County.

Further meeting were held at the Moss Street School which is now Head Start Learning Center on Burgoyne Ave. A jeep was first used as a fire truck and in May of 1949 a 1923 American Lafrance was bought from Hudson Falls for $1.00. The first fire trucks were housed in the shop of Walter Hunsberger with a siren mounted on the roof of the shop.(next to the Community Pool).

Telephone numbers of three members were distributed to the residents of Kingsbury to report fires. After receving the call other members were alerted by phone calls and the siren was sounded to alert the fire company.

By August of 1949 donations of money and materials from the community were collected to build a firehouse. Land was donated by Charles and Doris Brouillete for $1.00 and members began building doing most of the labor themselves. In 1950 Station # 1 had it's Grand Opening.

In 1949 the Kingsbury Town board held a meeting and agreed to a 5 year contract  of $2000.00 a year to begin in 1950. At first, money was tight and a hat was passed around at meeting to cover the bills. If enough wasn't obtained the hat was passed again. Fund raisers such as Clam Bakes, Dinners and Dances were held to help raise money. In 1956 Bingo was started to assist in keeping the company "out of the red".

1950 saw the organization of the Woman's Auxilary.

Also in 1950 the company purchased its first new fire truck a 1949 Studebaker pumper. Which the company still owns.(see apparatus section for photo)

In 1955 because of the distance from station # 1 on Burgoyne Ave. to the northern border of the district a secnd station was built in the Hamlet of Kingsbury on the Kingsbury Road. In 1973 a larger station was built next to the original station # 2.
